68 year old David Lee Boyes of Wray was arrested over the weekend when his erratic driving behavior led to the discovery of over 18 grams of methamphetamine in his vehicle. Friday evening, a Yuma County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle being driven by Boyes after witnessing it swerving into oncoming lanes of traffic on Highway 385 south of Wray. Deputies suspected Boyes of driving under the influence of drugs and placed him under arrest. While preparing to impound Boyes’ vehicle for safekeeping, further evidence of narcotics use was observed in plain view inside the vehicle. A search warrant was obtained and yielded the discovery of more pipes, a scale, several small baggies, and two bags of methamphetamine totaling 18.11 grams. A quantity that is greater than “personal use,” this amount of methamphetamine can retail for upwards of $2,000.
“While traffic enforcement is important, our focus with traffic is on identifying and interdicting criminal activity,” says Sheriff Chad Day. “This case is a good example of how a traffic stop can be used as a criminal investigatory tool in our rural community.”
Boyes is currently being held in the Yuma County Jail without bail until he is formally advised of his charges by a District Court Judge. Boyes has been charged with Unlawful Distribution, Manufacturing, Dispensing, or Sale of a Schedule II Controlled Substance (Drug Felony 2), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Drug Petty Offense), Careless Driving (Misdemeanor Traffic 2), and Driving Under the Influence of Drugs (Misdemeanor).
