Yuma County, CO

Seized Horse Adoption Event

Back on July 27th of this year, the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office seized 56 horses from a ranch south of Yuma owned by Sammy Lammey. There has been a great outpouring of public support for these horses throughout the evolution of this case, including much interest in keeping the horses in Yuma County. Although the case has not yet reached a disposition in the courts, the court has authorized the dispersal of the animals from the custody of the Sheriff. Therefore the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting an adoption event for these animals beginning at 10 AM on November 26th. It will be held at the Yuma County Fairgrounds where 51 horses will be up for adoption. The horses will be in the corrals behind the bucking chutes at the rodeo arena. Although in extremely thin and poor condition when they were seized, they have been nursed back to health at great expense of time and resources. You will be pleased to see their current condition and are encouraged to attend even if you are not interested or able to adopt.

All interested parties will be required to fill out an adoption application, meet some minimum requirements, and be willing to sign a reasonable contract concerning their future care. The cost of adoption is $100 per horse. There will be a variety of mares, geldings, colts, fillies, and some stallions at the event. At this point, 28 of the adult horses are AQHA registered. Yuma County residents will be given priority, but the event will be conducted through a lottery draw.

Further adoption event details and case disposition will be available in future press releases, but if you would like to come to the Sheriff’s Office and pick up an adoption application, you may do so. The applications will also be available on the Sheriff’s Office website at yumacountysheriff.net. Click Here to download the application (pdf).

Call the Sheriff’s Office at 332-4805 with any other questions.
